Calling All Book Lovers to Downtown Jacksonville

By Phoebe Mullis, Fall Marketing and Events Intern

The humid weather in Downtown Jacksonville is beginning to be replaced by a chilly breeze with leaves dropping from their branches. The cooler weather plus delicious holiday coffee drinks equal the perfect time to enjoy being outside. It’s the best time to go on the hunt for your next favorite book. For book lovers in Jacksonville who want to explore their options in Downtown Jax from books to connecting with local creators to reading spots, we’ve got you covered.

Visit Chamblin’s Uptown, an independent bookstore, where they have two stories of used, new, and rare books filling every room you step into. They also have a cafe nestled in the building with dining areas inside and on their outdoor patio. The smell of leather-bound books, the paper-tearing sound of milk being steamed and cozy spots to sit and discover new stories are a book lover’s dream. Local writers often hold the space to debut and read from their works. There is a special shelf dedicated to local authors because Downtown Jax is filled with talented writers!

If you’re an avid reader, discover the Jacksonville Public Main Library for a plethora of books within reach. You’ll know you’re there when you see the owl statue paired with a key symbolizing the access to knowledge that public libraries offer to the public. Inside the library is a modern atmosphere with marble flooring, several stories, and rooms big enough to hold events. There are countless beautiful places to read at the library, especially the courtyard.

A notable event happening soon is a Duval Comic & Zine Fest on October 22nd from noon to 5 p.m., which will celebrate local and self-published media. Learn more about the event here

With a public library card, readers are eligible to participate in the Libby program. This program allows cardholders to download e-books, audiobooks, and magazines from the library’s catalog. You can borrow up to ten titles at a time for free. This is a program you don’t want to miss!

Walking out of the library, across the street is James Weldon Johnson Park, which is a great spot to sit and enjoy your new read. The park has plenty of cafe tables, chairs, and other seating areas with a fountain giving the surrounding area a calm atmosphere.
