Downtown Jacksonville is home to a community full of talented and acclaimed artists. Take a look at some of #DTJax’s current art created by local artists at our galleries and museums!
The Cummer Museum
In honor of World Watercolor Month, head to the Cummer and view “Frieseke in Florida.” Frederick Carl Frieseke, an American Impressionist painter, shows the evolution of watercolor paintings in this eye-catching exhibition. The exhibit’s paintings reflect his childhood spent in Jacksonville during the 1880s.
Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)
“Maud Cotter: what was never ours to keep” arrived at MOCA for Project Atrium this month and is here until November 13. Maud Cotter is an Irish artist who specializes in beautiful sculptural installations. This Project Atrium exhibition is the first U.S. commission by Cotter.
Museum of Science & History (MOSH)
MOSH features local artists through its Artist in Residence program. This program has artists design a project to share with the local community and contribute original work for the benefit of the museum. Artist in Residence Princess Simpson Rashid’s work for the museum, “Wonder Wall,” depicts the human brain circuitry in relation to visual perception and creativity. This creative piece arrived just last week so make sure to check it out in the Creation Station at MOSH!
The Jessie Ball duPont Center
“The Roots that Ground Us” is a public mural located outside the Jessie that was fully finished this past May. Filipino American Grace Bio handpainted this stunning mural in dedication to all Filipino Americans, especially those living in Jacksonville. There are over 33,000 Filipino Americans living in this city, and the mural is the first of its kind to depict Filipino culture in the region.
Southlight Gallery
Check out some current work from Paul Karabinis at the Southlight Gallery. Karabinis explores art through historical photographic processes. His gallery features cyanotypes and salt prints from a variety of photographic methods.
Art Walk
Every first Wednesday of the month, Downtown Vision proudly hosts Art Walk! This event takes place at Downtown’s Northbank and features a variety of local art. Make sure to mark your calendars for the next #DTJax Art Walk happening on August 3!
