On August 27, the City of Jacksonville officially unveiled a new historical marker at James Weldon Johnson Park commemorating Axe Handle Saturday, the 1960 attack on young civil rights demonstrators that helped spur lasting change in our city.
This marker is part of a growing effort: Jacksonville was selected earlier this year to join the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, and organizers plan to install 40 markers across the city honoring key moments in the movement.
