Juneteenth 2022 in Downtown Jacksonville

By Savanne Giroire, Marketing and Events Assistant

“The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.”

General Gordon Granger issued this Order No. 3, informing the people of Texas that all enslaved people were now free on June 19th, 1865. Since this date, Juneteenth has been the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This year, on the 157th commemoration of the holiday, we continue the celebrations through community projects, spaces and events taking place in #DTJax and look forward to seeing you there!
