An Evening of String Quartets with The Lawson Ensemble

Dr. Nick Curry is Professor of Cello and Assistant Director of the School of Music at the University of North Florida, where he also serves as Director of Music Scholarships. A dynamic performer and educator, Dr. Curry co-founded the Lawson Ensemble in 2015 with Jacksonville musicians Aurica Duca and Clinton Dewing. The ensemble, in residence at UNF, has toured internationally across England and Germany and collaborated with the San Marco Chamber Music Society to record works by Amy Beach and Bill Douglas for Albany Records in 2018.

Dr. Curry holds a Bachelor of Music degree, cum laude, from Vanderbilt University, and both Master and Doctor of Music degrees from Northwestern University, where he was the longtime teaching assistant to renowned cellist Hans Jørgen Jensen. He also worked alongside Professor Jensen at the prestigious Meadowmount School of Music for several summers.

An active performer, Dr. Curry has given concerts across the United States and internationally in Austria, England, France, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, Taiwan, Germany, and Turkey. He was featured as a soloist on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companionin 2006, performing on the historic King Amati cello (ca. 1538).

Beyond the stage, Dr. Curry is a respected teacher and clinician, having taught at the Meadowmount School of Music, Aria International Music Festival, Ascent Intensive Cello Week, and Ascent Complete Cellist Live. He is a frequent presenter at music education conferences and has published multiple articles in the ASTA Journal. At UNF, he is the recipient of the Gerson Yessin Professorship, an Eisen Experiential Grant, and the prestigious Presidential Faculty Leader Award. He also founded the annual Jacksonville Cello Workshop, furthering his commitment to excellence in cello education.
